Howard Langston

Howard is my favourite Malifaux miniature at the moment. In the game he’s amazing; expensive and fragile, but amazing. He’s pretty easy to get in position, works really well with Ramos, can do 3 attacks in a turn and has a instant-kill trigger. I suspect most of you who have played Malifaux will have either run or met him, so don’t need me to tell you what he’s capable of.

I also really like the miniature. It’s big, dynamic and just screams Steamborg Executioner. The only criticism is that Wyrd have played a little fast and loose when it comes to actually fitting him on a 50mm base. Now, it’s not as still as the Brass Arachnid, but it’s still a tight squeeze.

Painting him went really well too. Most of the time was spent on his torso and face; the rest of the model is mainly metallic paint. I’m really happy with how his flesh came out. I think it has come out looking quite natural, and a different shade to Joss. I intended for Joss’s ancestry to be Native American and Howard’s to be European. The red colouration around the metal-flesh transitions also gives some colour variation to the flesh and is meant to look like scarring and irritation that would surely result from staples across your chest and giant clawed tentacles emerging from your back.

I’m also pretty happy with the metals. My technique with the washes is creating an effect I’m pretty happy. I also applied some highlights to this model which really bring out the edges. I’m also pretty stoked with the blue details. I was worried it was going to all look a bit boring with only 2 main colours. The blue fixes that and also ties it in with the rest of the crew.
